Why do we believe things simply because someone says so in church?
This is just SO ridiculous to me. Don't get me wrong....I did the same thing when I went to church. At the time, I thought my pastor was a smart man and trusted him to distinguish truth from untruth. However, as I've grown older, I realize how backwards that entire concept is. Even before I freed myself from my god belief, I began to question what the pastor said. I started looking things up for myself to see what other people thought the truth was.
Unfortunately, my in-laws have not attempted to verify anything their pastor says. And, now that I'm looking in on it, it truly disgusts me. Example: My bil told us that he read that NASA scientists are feverishly working on ways to divert comets. He told us a big story about how there is a comet heading toward earth and is supposed to collide with earth in 2012.
At the time, we were up at the cabin where there is no internet access. So, I wasn't able to check his facts right then. However, when I got home, I decided to do some research. Hmmm...what's a good place to start? Maybe the NASA website? So, I checked them out. There is some really cool information about comets...but I don't see any evidence of feverish work or any mention of a theory that a comet is on a collision course with earth.
OK. Well, I know what his explanation would be...it's a conspiracy. Of course, that is the most logical conclusion :) The government, which doesn't want to spend money to fund scientific research, is secretly funding this project AND paying off all of the scientists around the world who know about this. Oh my, it seems that those payoffs will keep increasing as new graduates discover this fact for themselves...Hmmm
Or maybe, ,some preacher made the whole thing up based on his interpretation of Revelations. I don't know...which seems more likely to you? A HUGE government conspiracy or a pastor making something up to get more money from people.
I just have to laugh, but it is truly sad. He really believes this. I don't know if he read it in one of his churchy magazines, heard it from his pastor, or what. But, it wouldn't take long for him to verify what he's being told.

Do some more research dear... Think out side the box. Do you really think that IF NASA did really find out about a gigantic comet that is heading twords earth that could possibly wipe out human civilization as we know it completly, they would post it up on there WEBSITE!!??? Come now i can see the headlines now. " Giant Comet heading twords earth. We cant stop it but lets all hope for the best." ( in a nut shell )...There would be TOTAL CHAOS amongst the world. No one would care about their jobs or their bills or anything..
Look Deeper into the subject and think out side Your Little Box. Do some more research on 2012 and you'll be suprised how many others are as" wacky" as your Pastor.
First of all...anonymous...I find it hard to take someone seriously when they don't leave a name. Second of all, what part of my post did you not understand. I have looked for verification beyond one website and the only thing I have come upon is cooky Bible code stuff.
Have you any evidence to back up your claim that this is true? If you do, why didn't you post your evidence instead of attempting an attack on me?
I also do not accept your conclusion that there would be "total chaos amongst the world" if a comet were heading toward earth. The people who make these claims also claim that NASA is working diligently to find a way to stop it. Someone who would stop paying bills and cease caring about their lives for something that may or may not happen 5 years from now is in need of psychiatric help. I have a higher opinion of the people in this world.
Lastly, I'm not sure if you realize this, but just because there is a group of people who believe something...it doesn't make it true. So, yes I realize that there are many people out there who are as wacky as the pastor I linked to. What's your point?

you can check up on that info but like in any discussion, there are always people on opposite sides of the fence.

I am a lowly physics undergrad, and something about the whole conspiracy thing is inconsistent:
Where is it?! Just that. Don't get me any bible quotes, or Nostradamus predictions (I've found enough of those to last me a lifetime), just tell me where it is. I'll go to the observatory, and check it out. No political, social, philosophical, historical, or paranormal arguments are needed. Just give me the time and place.
The "anonymous" guys seem to think that there's only telescopes at Nasa...

Key word in that sentence is about. First of all, my post was about a comet. Second, the claim I wrote about is the claim that the comet is supposed to hit in 2012. In my book, that would not qualify as "about to hit."

I did search for the word NEAT and found the official site on it. But, you obviously did not do what you asked me to do. My guess is that you got your information from someone else and didn't bother to double check.
You claim that NEAT is the name of the comet. WRONG. It stands for Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking. It is an interesting website with links to pictures and updates on new discoveries. You might find the FAQ section quite interesting.
Obviously, I hit a nerve with this post because I keep getting anonymous comments about how I am wrong. Yet, nobody wants to provide any evidence that the claim is true. Hey, I'll admit I am wrong if you show me the evidence...REAL scientific evidence.

I apologize for saying that NEAT is not the name of a comet. I just came across a picture of Comet Neat. However, there is no evidence that it is going to collide with earth and the first article that comes up when you google "comet neat" says the conspiracy theory is bunk.
When one searches for NEAT by itself, one will find information on NASA's Near Earth Asteroid Tracking.
I just wanted to clear that up.
My father worked at NASA for 25 years. He worked for Lockheed Martin for the remainder of his career. My family is heavily involved in the space program. You all want the truth? Well, I'll give to you.
Six years ago, NASA discovered a menacing comet. The Hilton Comet, named after Paris Hilton, seemed to come out of nowhere and was on a direct course to hit Earth.
NASA tried the so-called "Star Wars" technology to blow up the comet. Unfortunately, it didn't work. They only fractured the comet into two.
The two comets are now skinnier and look exact in nature. NASA renamed them the Olsen Twins Comets.

I hope your comment was meant as satire because that is how I took it. I have made it clear in my post as well as the comments that one must provide evidence if they want other people to believe the claim they make.
As far as giving god another chance...why do you assume the only god to be given a chance is the god of the bible? Have you given Allah a chance? I have read the Bible and that is why I am an atheist. Hopefully this part of your comment was satire too :)
You will never Get your HARD FACTUAL EVIDENCE. The Fact is that there are things in THIS world that we can not explain but we have accepted the fact that it is there and is a part of our Universal Laws. This Goes Way deeper than just a stupid comet that could destroy us all... It all has to do with YOUR Consciousness...You inside of your mind looking out through your iris and observing the world + computing the information that our reality and dimension is expressing for your mind to configure your thoughts.. We all share the same experience within each of us.. think about it
Look up Topics on Consciousness and how it correlates to our reality and the realness of things.. Then take a look at all the past Ancient Civilizations and what they studied when they did not have things like Materialism, Egoism, Technology, the internet i mean c'mon !!! they studied about LIFE.. And when it comes down to it and you shed all these ridiculous things to be worried about .. we all ask the same question why are we here or how did it happen...
Our Governments of the world and world powers ( oil companies, Television media ) have known and has studied all these ancient teachings and realized how much they really new in comparison to the mind set of now... Well anonymous Michael, I'll be counting down the days until October 14....I'm guessing it will be just another day :) Yes, I do require evidence and if you don't than I'm afraid that is where we disagree. Your accusations against me are ridiculous....I have never said that I won't believe anyone. I've asked for verifiable evidence and yet nobody can provide it....odd that someone can predict an exact year and an exact happening but can't provide evidence for it. I find it scary that there are people in this world who claim that we will never have our evidence...I hope this is not how you approach most things in your everyday life.

PS - A comet hitting earth is the least of your worries. Imagine one passing right between us and the sun pulling off our magnetic field and sending solar flares all the way down to the earths surface cooking the oceans and creating unheard of disaster across the globe.
You say you want proof? Well the best I can give you is 16 months away.
