I just read this news article and had to share it. It's so funny! It seems that Oklahoma lawmakers were given copies of the Quran by the state panel on diversity. I expect that the diversity panel thought they might be rational enough to try to learn what other people believe.
Instead, many of these lawmakers are returning the Qurans because....this is the funny part....it condones the killing of innocent people. I suspect that if any of these lawmakers were given a copy of the Bible they wouldn't hesitate to keep it (many of them probably already own one.) But wait, shouldn't they object to that as well...it condones the killing of innocent people. Maybe they just haven't read that part yet. Yeah, that must be it ;).
The article goes on to say that the chairwoman of this committee, herself a Muslim, is upset by this description of Islam. She claims Islam is a "very peaceful, very inclusive" religion. Well, most Christians believe that their religion is all about love and peace, too. But, that doesn't make their holy book any less gruesome. It simply means that most Christians have not read their own holy book....or they just choose to skip those pesky bad parts. Now, I have not read the Quran, so I personally cannot attest to grusomeness in it. However, given that Muslims accept much of what the Bible says, I would have to presume that Islam is not full of flowers and kisses either.
Pot meet kettle. Kettle meet pot.
Mere regularity is not enough

That is quite funny. I have fantasized about being asked to give the reading at a wedding. My response would be "Sure, if I can choose the verses." I would love to see the reaction to much of the bible if certain verses were ever read in church. Although I doubt anyone really listens.
Wouldn't that be fun! There must be some people who listen...seeing their reactions would be priceless :) I can picture them scrambling to look up the verses to make sure they were actually there.
